As many of you are aware, Steve Smith is one of the world's most revered drummers... What most musicians heard in his playing was a lot more than straight grooves; his drum parts were compositions! Not too busy, but very interesting and anything but ordinary....
Needless to say the grooves on Rhythmic Journey are flawless and sound phenomenal - pre mixed by Elson, Frangioni and Rogers. There are also individual sounds for drum replacement or those that want to construct their own grooves with the included sounds... These grooves stay out of the way; yet provide a solid foundation as only a drummer of Steve Smith’s calibre can deliver. The combined experience of Elson, Frangioni, Rogers and Smith has produced one of the best sounding and best performed drum loop CDs of all time....". Nice and understated!
So in short we have an acoustic drum loops CD with several tracks of individual drum hits at the end. A growing trend, and one very much welcomed, is that the release is a 2CD one for the price of a regular full price release. The first disc is your regular audio CD whilst the second contains the same material in .wav format. Certainly makes the CD a whole lot easier to use if you can use the .wav format, you simply audition the audio version and load up the data version. No need to worry about recording the sample, editing it etc. makes the creative process a whole lot more seamless. So full marks to East/West here.
Steve Smith, for those not familiar with Journey, was their drummer through the period around 1977 - 1984. Journey were a very successful American ballad/rock/MOR band with various line ups from 1973-87, the period that Steve Smith was with them was probably their most successful period. Since then he's gone on with his own band, Vital Information, and is still making albums today, just last year releasing Steve Smith & Buddy's Buddies. Co-producer credits go to David Frangioni and Doug Rogers, who have been behind other sample CD projects such as Dance Industrial 1 & 2 amongst others.
The documentation is very good, aside from the page of introduction, each track is listed out, with a descriptive title and the type of snare drum used, a BPM, the number of variations on the track and descriptions - which is usually just "loops", "fills" or "intro/endings". Also at the end you get a listing of the microphones used, interestingly there are 10 different, that's not a kit miked up with 10 microphones, that's 10 different microphones. One for each particular position of the recording process. No doubt culled from years of experience from the producers.
There is just a regulation standard licence agreement, though the wording has been tweaked further to try and accommodate the electronic age in which we live. They at least grant that you own the CD, though not the sounds on it, and "uploading or downloading to any database, server..." is expressly forbidden. There is no demo track or test tone.
